Last weekend, I had the chance to embark on an unforgettable tour to Tecate called Ruta del Maíz with Tijuana City Tours. This tour was a delightful blend of nature, culture, history, and delicious food, and I’m excited to share the experience.

Stop 1: Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze Magic

We started the day bright and early at 9 a.m., just outside of downtown Tijuana. Our first stop was a stunning pumpkin patch, where vibrant fields of marigolds (the famous Day of the Dead flower) and colorful blooms stretched across the horizon. The highlight here was a corn maze—a perfect spot for lighthearted fun and plenty of photo ops.

Besides the scenic beauty, the pumpkin patch offered delicious specialty coffees, hot chocolate, and even freshly made oven-roasted pizzas and corn tamales. It was an excellent start to the day, fueling us for the adventure ahead.

Stop 2: Lunch at El Lugar de Nos, Tecate

Next, we hopped back on our comfy bus and made our way to the charming town of Tecate for lunch at El Lugar de Nos. This cozy restaurant serves farm-to-table dishes that blew me away. I opted for the jamaica (hibiscus flower) tacos, which were bursting with flavor and unlike anything I’ve had before—delicious, refreshing, and unique!

Stop 3: Archaeological Exploration of Kumiai Site

After our meal, we ventured to a Kumiai archaeological site, where our knowledgeable tour guide gave us insight into the indigenous culture of the Kumiai people. We learned about Encino (oak) trees and the many stones historically used for tasks like grinding acorns and crafting tools. The connection to nature and history was palpable, giving us a deep appreciation for the land.

Stop 4: Exploring Historic Tecate Downtown

Our fourth stop took us to the heart of downtown Tecate. This bustling area had an old-world charm, and we could explore, shop, and enjoy some ice cream while soaking in the local ambiance. We had a great time people-watching and wandering through the quaint streets, capturing the essence of this historic city.

Stop 5: Sweet Ending at the Famous Tecate Bakery

No trip to Tecate would be complete without a visit to the famous Tecate Bakery. Here, we indulged in an array of freshly baked treats like empanadas, cuernitos (croissants), muffins, and cookies. They even offered complimentary coffee, making this stop the perfect sweet ending to our day. The bakery’s bread lived up to its reputation—everything was divine.

Overall Experience

We arrived back in downtown Tijuana around 7:30 p.m., feeling full, happy, and enriched by the cultural and culinary delights of the day. Parking near the bus stop was convenient, with an affordable $6 all-day parking option. The tour was led by a certified driver and a knowledgeable historical tour guide, who ensured our safety and provided fascinating insights.

The weather was perfect—77°F, a warm and sunny fall day, making the experience even more enjoyable. It was a memorable trip shared with four friends, and we spent the entire day laughing, learning, and having a blast.
