A Day Trip to San Juan Capistrano

If you’re looking for a charming and historical day trip from San Diego, San Juan Capistrano is the perfect destination. Whether you drive or take the train, there’s plenty to see and do in this picturesque town. Here’s how to make the most of your visit.

Getting There

We opted to drive to San Juan Capistrano and found free parking at the park near the mission. It’s a convenient spot that puts you right in the heart of the action. The parking is in the Historic District, and the address is 26587 Ramos Street, San Juan Capistrano, 92675. If you prefer not to drive, you can take the train along the coast from San Diego for just $24 each way. The scenic ride offers beautiful coastal views and is a relaxing way to start your day.

Arriving Early

To beat the crowds, plan on arriving around 9 a.m. This gives you a head start on enjoying the town before it gets too busy.

Breakfast at Breezey

Start your day with a delicious breakfast or coffee at Breezey, located near your parking spot and across the street from the Mission. Their fusion menu offers a variety of tasty options to fuel your adventure. We had the Ube French toast made of crusted milk bread, caramelized bananas, Ube whipped cream, toasted coconut flakes, coconut crema, and mixed berries. Additionally, we tried the Adobe breakfast bowl, which includes shredded pork adobo, a sunny-side-up egg, pickled onions, cherry tomatoes, mixed green salad with yuzu vinaigrette, and garlic rice. It was a mouthwatering dish! Lastly, we shared the Island Chicken bowl, featuring Island-style marinated chicken, a sunny-side-up egg, served over a bed of white rice, and a mixed greens salad with yuzu vinaigrette. We also enjoyed a delicious cafe latte with lavender..

Exploring the Mission

After breakfast, head across the street to the Mission San Juan Capistrano. This historic site, founded in 1776, is known as the "Jewel of the California Missions." It’s filled with beautiful gardens, stunning architecture, and rich history. As you wander through the mission grounds, you’ll find the iconic Great Stone Church ruins, a testament to the mission's historical significance and its destruction by an earthquake in 1812. Don’t miss the serene Central Courtyard, the Sacred Garden, and the beautiful Serra Chapel, the oldest building in California still in use.

The mission also hosts a variety of exhibits that provide insights into the life and times of the early Spanish settlers and the Native American Acjachemen people. Take your time to explore the artifacts, interactive displays, and historical documents that tell the story of this remarkable place.

Shopping and Wine Tasting

Once you’ve explored the mission, return to the train station and visit the nearby Los Rios Historic District. This charming area is lined with unique boutiques, art galleries, and quaint stores, perfect for leisurely shopping. You'll find handcrafted jewelry, local artwork, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs that capture the essence of San Juan Capistrano.

For wine enthusiasts, a stop at Rancho Capistrano Winery is a must. Located in the heart of the district, this family-owned winery offers a cozy atmosphere where you can sample various locally produced wines. Their tasting flights provide a delightful way to discover new favorites, and the knowledgeable staff is always happy to share the stories behind each vintage. If you prefer a more laid-back setting, consider heading to Five Vines Wine Bar, just a short stroll away. Here, you can enjoy a curated selection of wines and craft beers paired with delicious small plates in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Lunch and Dana Point Views

You can extend your trip by a 5-minute drive to Dana Point if you're driving. Enjoy a relaxing lunch with stunning ocean views, the perfect end to your day trip. To celebrate my birthday, we had a picnic with a birthday cake and a beautiful view of the harbor. The picnic area at Dana Point is ideal for unwinding, with plenty of scenic spots. After lunch, walk down the park along the marina and watch the boats sail by. It’s a beautiful way to cap off your visit to San Juan Capistrano with a mix of relaxation and breathtaking coastal beauty.

Whether you drive or take the train, San Juan Capistrano offers a delightful mix of history, shopping, and scenic beauty. Arrive early, explore at your own pace, and enjoy everything this lovely town offers.
